WHAT IS ANXIETY?

Anxiety is your body’s natural alarm system. But when it won’t switch off, it becomes a problem. Anxiety disorders affect approximately 1 in 3 Australians and can seriously impact your sleep, work, and relationships.

It may be time to see a psychiatrist for anxiety if:

  • You feel worried or on edge most days for no clear reason

  • You are avoiding people or situations because of fear

  • You experience panic attacks

  • It keeps coming back despite trying to manage it yourself

  • Your GP has recommended seeing a psychiatrist

Anxiety Conditions We Treat

Our anxiety disorder psychiatrists have experience across the full range of anxiety conditions. Whatever you are going through, we can assess and support you.

Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

Persistent, excessive worry about everyday things, work, health, money, and family. That is difficult to control. GAD can leave you feeling exhausted and on edge, even when life is going well.

Social Anxiety Disorder

An intense fear of being judged, embarrassed, or humiliated in social situations. This goes far beyond shyness, social anxiety can make everyday interactions feel like an enormous challenge.

Panic Disorder

Sudden, repeated episodes of intense fear that come on without warning. Panic attacks can cause physical symptoms like chest tightness, dizziness, sweating, and difficulty breathing. Also can feel terrifying even though they are not physically dangerous.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Unwanted, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) that lead to repetitive behaviors or mental acts (compulsions) to try to manage the distress. OCD can take up hours of the day and significantly impact the quality of life.

Health Anxiety

Persistent worry about having or developing a serious illness, even when medical tests come back clear. People with health anxiety often find themselves constantly checking their bodies or seeking reassurance from doctors.

Specific Phobias

An intense, irrational fear of a specific object or situation. Such as heights, flying, needles, or certain animals, that causes significant distress or avoidance.

Anxiety with Depression

Anxiety and depression very commonly occur together. Many people who see a psychiatrist for anxiety and depression find that both conditions are influencing each other, and that treating them together leads to better outcomes.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Anxiety rooted in a past traumatic experience. PTSD can cause flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, and emotional numbness  , and often requires specialist psychiatric support.

How Our Psychiatrists for Anxiety Approach Treatment

Getting the right psychiatrist for anxiety starts with being truly heard. Our psychiatrists take time to understand not just your symptoms, but your life, background, and goals.

Initial Consultation
A conversation, not a checklist. Your psychiatrist listens, asks questions, and builds a personalized plan. A GP referral is required. Contact our reception team if you need guidance.

Your Diagnosis
You will receive a clear, plain-language explanation of what is going on. Understanding your diagnosis is the first step to feeling in control.

Your Treatment Plan
No two plans look the same. Depending on your needs, your psychiatrist may recommend:

  • Psychological therapy (including CBT)

  • Medication, where appropriate

  • Lifestyle strategies like sleep, exercise, and mindfulness

  • Coordination with your GP and psychologist

Ongoing Support
Recovery is not a one-appointment process. We review your progress regularly and adjust your plan as needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral to see a psychiatrist for anxiety?

Yes. To access Medicare rebates, you will need a referral from your GP or another medical specialist. Your GP will assess your situation and, if appropriate, refer you to one of our psychiatrist for anxiety. If you are unsure how to get a referral, our reception team is happy to walk you through the process.

Both psychiatrists and psychologists can help with anxiety, but they have different training and roles. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who has completed additional specialist training in mental health. This means a psychiatrist can both assess and diagnose anxiety disorders and prescribe medication if needed. A psychologist focuses on therapy-based treatments but cannot prescribe medication. For moderate to severe anxiety, or when medication may be needed, seeing a psychiatrist is often recommended.

Yes. One of the key advantages of seeing a psychiatrist for anxiety rather than a GP alone is that psychiatrists have specialist knowledge of psychiatric medications. If medication is appropriate for your situation, your psychiatrist will discuss the options openly with you, explain how they work, and monitor your response over time. Medication is always a shared decision — never something that is pushed on you.

Anxiety and depression frequently occur together, and treating only one without addressing the other often leads to incomplete recovery. An anxiety disorder psychiatrist with experience in co-occurring depression can assess both conditions simultaneously and build a treatment plan that addresses the full picture. This might include a combination of therapy, medication, and lifestyle support tailored to both conditions.

The length of treatment varies depending on the type and severity of your anxiety and how you respond to treatment. Some people notice meaningful improvement within a few weeks of starting the right therapy or medication. Others benefit from longer-term support. Your psychiatrist will give you an honest expectation at your first appointment and regularly review your progress together with you.

With a valid GP referral, you are eligible for a Medicare rebate for your psychiatric consultations. Our reception team can provide current fee information and explain out-of-pocket costs clearly before your first appointment. We believe cost should never be a barrier to getting the mental health support you deserve.
